What if I have a driving license from another country?
A driving license acquired in a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) is also valid in Sweden and will remain so as long as it is valid in the EEA country it was issued in.
You may also exchange an EEA driving license for a Swedish driving license if you’ve been registered with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). Swiss and Japanese driving licenses may also be exchanged. A non-Eu driving license is usually valid in Sweden for a year. After 12 months, you’ll no longer be able to drive with a non-EU license. Unlike an EEA license, you usually can’t exchange non-EU license for a Swedish one and will therefore have to go through a longer process.
How do I get a Swedish driving license?
There are essentially two requirements for getting a Swedish driving license – completing the risk training and passing the driving test which consists of the written theoretical test and the driving test in a car. Also, the risk training must be completed before the driving test can be taken.
The driving test will be meticulously graded and evaluated so study is needed to prepare for it. You can prepare for the driving test by getting a learners permit, enrolling in a driving school, and studying driving theory (which includes traffic laws).
Here are the recommended steps to follow:
- Practice driving with a learners permit
- Study driving theory
- Take the risk training – riskutbildning
- Pass the theoretical test
- Pass the driving test
Driving with a learners permit
Even if you already know how to drive, it can be very helpful to get first-hand experience of driving in Sweden and better prepare yourself for the driving portion of the driving test. With a learners permit, you’ll be able to drive with a certified instructor – handledare in Swedish.
You’ll need to send an application and a health & eyesight declaration to the Swedish Transport Agency – Transportstyrlesen – in order to receive your learners permit. This requires that you get an eyesight certificate (synintyg) by taking an eye test at either an optician or at a driving school. You must also pay an application fee of 220 SEK. You’ll receive your learners permit once your application has been processed and approved.
Once you have your learners permit, you can drive with a handledare in the car with you. Anybody who’s at least 24 years old and who’s had his/her driving license for at least five years can get a handledare certification. This means that a friend or perhaps a family member can serve as your personal handledare as long as he/she has been certified. But even if you have your own personal handledare, it can also be advantageous to attend a driving school – trafikskola in Swedish.
Attending a driving school in Sweden
Driving schools will generally teach you both the practical and the theoretical aspects of driving. This means that you’ll be driving with an instructor (trafikskolelärare in Swedish) as well as learning about traffic laws and road safety in order to better prepare you for the questions on the theory test. Driving school usually takes several weeks but is a good way to ensure that you have the knowledge required for obtaining your driving license.
